DJ Maphorisa Accused of Assault
Themba Sekowe, popularly known as DJ Maphorisa, is expected to appear in court today, Monday 8 May, after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, actress Thuli Phongolo.
The 35-year-old musician was arrested on Sunday, 7 May, after the former “Generations: The Legacy” actress opened a case with the Sandton Police in Johannesburg, Gauteng earlier that same day.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Phongolo’s new apartment in Sandton, where the two were continuing a heated argument that they had started at a gig Sekowe was scheduled to perform at the night before.
Phongolo reportedly told police Sekowe had denied her access to her cellphone during the altercation. She added that as soon as she had the phone back, she’d called her manager to take her to the nearest police station.
An unnamed source has revealed that the couple have had “heated” arguments before – both in December and again in April – with accusations of infidelity being thrown around.
Sekowe was also scheduled to perform at a nightclub called Konka, alongside the Grammy Award-winning Black Coffee, on Sunday evening, however, when the producer failed to appear for his set, rumours began to circulate on Twitter.
As usual, Twitter has been polarised on the topic – with some believing the accusations and supporting Phongolo, while others remain less convinced.
